Set just over a mile inland from the North Cornwall coast with Lundy in the distance, this 1960s vernacular farmworkers dwelling had a poor relationship between the immediate countryside and the sea beyond.
The alterations have provided an additional bedroom with a new functional plan that has resolved circulation problems of the original house.
Most importantly the house now has new connection to the landscape and sea beyond.
Simple white interiors are paired with well chosen materials to give light filled interiors. A newly insulated west facing wall punctuated by windows allows the immediate landscape and views beyond to be experienced from within.
This defensive side to the house protects the house from the worst of the North Atlantic weather.
The kitchen is a combination of IKEA components added to with bespoke detailing and finishes. The end result is one of uniqueness and craft that has been completed inexpensively.
The simple island is designed to feel more like a piece of furniture, mediating between the kitchen and dining spaces. It is now a place to cook, drink and be social.
The new bedroom has been designed to sit comfortably in the adhoc arrangement of the original roof forms. Its simple pitched roof form is clad externally in metal profiled sheeting common to agricultural buildings in the area.
Combined with the naturally finished render this new addition separates itself subtly against the original backdrop of the house.
